Rugby is a game that has not received nearly as much video game representation has other sports such as football and baseball – and that’s a shame. Rugby began in 19th century England and, as of 2014, there were still 6 million players around the globe! NACON and Eko Software released their first rugby title, Rugby 18, in 2018. Unfortunately, that title did not score well with critics overall but then they released Rugby 20 and scores improved somewhat. Now, in 2022, they have launched the latest version of the game: Rugby 22.
From a presentation perspective, Rugby 22 does look a lot better than its predecessors, but some visual hiccups do rear their ugly heads. That, on top of some weirdly shaped players and unusual animations, are present, however, the overall action, when in motion, looks pretty good and the frame rate remains solid on current-gen consoles, so at least it runs smoothly.
Unfortunately, I don’t have too much positive to say about the graphics in Rugby 22. The look of the gameplay takes me back to the early to mid-2000s and this is not very appealing. This is quite a subjective view though and I would advise checking out some online gameplay trailers to see for yourself.
The game’s career mode is lacking in so many ways that it should not even be called such a thing. It is much more aptly called a “Custom Team Mode” or something to that effect. There are no real career mode style options to be found anywhere in the mode. Training, organizational, and logistical decisions are nowhere to be found. Putting together your custom team is also tedious, as you collect player cards through the course of gameplay in the other modes. You can’t actually create a player from scratch, so you’re a slave to unlocking player cards to add those players to your custom team.
Rugby 22 does not offer any development in terms of production. It's simple, except the menus, nothing changes! The players are modeled the same way and except for the headliners, they are not recognizable... The stadiums are not the official stadiums so don't waste time trying to recognize them. The problem is that already in 2020 the realization was dated, so in 2022 with the next gen, the rendering is borderline unacceptable. It's not pretty and in matches it is sorely lacking in fluidity with slow passing animations and choppy runs. The atmosphere is totally absent with a modeled public (I don't know if in this case the term modeled is the right word…) in a very strange way: things move in the stands, you hear money but you can't see anything!

I came, I saw but didn’t quite conquer. Rugby 22, while it has some faults and issues, is a fun experience worth playing when perhaps you need a break from that favourite that you play so much you start dreaming about it. It is what it is and definitely not what it’s not. This is not FIFA, it’s not Madden, nor is it NBA2K. But on its own merit, Rugby 22 is and can be a fun experience.
